On the Pulse

Allison Mitchell | April 1, 2014 | Articles

It’s been one wild ride for pop-music duo (and real-life couple) Nick Noonan and Amy Heidemann, better known as Karmin. After a year of rumored artistic struggles with their label Epic Records, the band just dropped their debut studio album, Pulses, on which you’ll find everything from pop to reggae to disco influences. After all, they’re kind of a big deal. This sensation first captured audiences back in 2011 with their YouTube cover of Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now,” which boasts nearly 90 million views to date. Here, the pair dish on everything from fellow power-duo Jay Z and BeyoncĂ© to love in the limelight. Listen in. @karminmusic

We’re so excited for your new album! Tell us about it.
AH: Our goal for this album is to raise pulses. We wanted to make Nick a bigger part of this album and make it sound more like a duo.

How do you balance your personal and professional relationship together?
NN: That is the secret question!
AH: We wrote a couple of songs on this album that I think are the most honest response that we’ve given. There’s one called ‘Tidal Wave’ and another called ‘Neon Love.’ It’s really complicated; you want to think that there are other people out there who are going through the same stuff [as us] like BeyoncĂ© and Jay Z. But it’s totally different [for us]. They were megastars before they even got together.

Heidemann recently voiced a character in Rio 2, out Apr. 11. Any other ventures happening outside of music?
NN: Amy’s probably going to start a beauty and makeup blog called Karminology, but that’s just one of the things!
