The Best Tailgate Party Ever

It’s the most wonderful time of the year in Atlanta: the return of football season. And with it comes a slew of weekend tailgate parties, some of which, perhaps, you’ll be tasked with hosting. You know you’ll need food (lots of it) and booze (also lots of it). But what’s the X-factor that will take the gathering from basic to beyond?

Enter the pros at Atlanta’s Bold Catering & Design, who showed us how to impress a crew of Falcons fanatics or die-hard Dawgs with an over-the-top sporty shindig.

“The idea for this party was to elevate the standard level of what a ‘tailgate’ looks like,” says Director of Design Brian Worley, who moved to ATL from Los Angeles last year and boasts a résumé that includes everything from celebrity weddings to red-carpet parties for American Idol and the Emmys. “We wanted to use the field, football and referee stripes as inspiration, but build upon those iconic elements of a football game to create a stunning event space. Bold’s catering team does it with their menus all the time—we love to take something simple, comforting and familiar, then make it upscale by adding a twist and bringing it to the next level.”

Next level, indeed: Bold’s catering team pulled out all the stops when designing the menu, producing a smorgasbord of options to satisfy even the pickiest of snackers. “We created a variety of mini sliders, incorporating unique, elevated toppings like sunny-side-up quail eggs, avocado and bacon jam, and pimento cheese options,” says executive chef Todd Annis. “We also created individually portioned seven-layer dips, built out our signature Snack Attack (a build-your-own snack bar) and prepared our take on custom team-colored Twinkies.” Even chocolate mousse was served in a pint glass to mimic the look of Guinness beer (genius).

Of course, actual alcohol is a tailgate essential, and a BYO bloody mary bar is a guaranteed crowd pleaser—especially if you’re operating around a noon kickoff. “We added a signature ‘pingpong’ burger to the mix, in addition to all the classic items you’d traditionally serve with a bloody mary,” Annis says. “It’s a fun, photoworthy addition that certainly catches people’s attention.”

Ultimately, a successful tailgate is about bringing friends together and making memories (hopefully that involve a win), and that’s where Bold’s collaborative setup really inspires. “Not many event companies offer [food, beverage, design and production] under one roof, and when we’re able to work together, the end result is always more creative, innovative and fun,” says Worley.
