Songs of the South

By Allison Mitchell | May 14, 2015 | Articles

The past six years have been a wild ride for the siblings of The Band Perry. Since Garth Brooks’ manager, Bob Doyle, discovered the songsters back in 2008, the group has garnered seven top 10 hits on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, won a Grammy for best country duo/group performance and has shared the stage with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Reba McEntire, Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton and more. Oh, and they performed at the White House for President Obama. No big deal. Here, The Band Perry’s youngest member, Neil Perry, dishes on ATL visits and hanging with Jay Z and BeyoncĂ©. @thebandperry

We can’t wait to see you rock the stage at Shaky Boots on Saturday, May 16. Tell us about your ties to ATL.
We go to Atlanta all the time and [our vocal coach, Jan Smith] introduced us to Fat Matt’s Rib Shack. [I also] had Gunshow for the first time four or five months ago. That place is amazing; I’ve been dying to get back.

Any big summer plans?
The three of us are putting the finishing touches on our third album. It’s really exciting. The music has awesome energy to it, and I can’t wait for you guys to hear it. We are nail-bitingly close [to the release].

If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing?
Kimberly has decided to be a baker by day and a private investigator by night. She is a Facebook stalker, so watch your Facebook. Reid would be some sort of lawyer or politician because he is the ultimate arguer. He’s the middle child. And then me, I’m the baby, and I would definitely be an actor.

You’re around famous people all the time. Do you ever get starstuck?
Absolutely. We are definitely fans first. At the Stevie Wonder special that we performed at, Jay Z and BeyoncĂ© were there, and the three of us got to meet them. KP [Kimberly Perry] swore that she would keep it together in front of the Queen Bey, but she pretty much squirmed and fangirled over her. I will say Jay Z and I now have a secret handshake. He doesn’t know it yet, but we do. So, we’re pretty much besties at this point.

If you could have anyone on the new album, who would it be?
We love Kendrick Lamar and who doesn’t want to do something with Bruno [Mars]? Personally, I would love to do something with Kanye West. I think he’s brilliant.
