Nadine Velazquez (@nadinevelazquez) embraces stardom in a new city as Queens premieres on ABC.
What aspect of Queens premiering are you most excited about?
I’m excited for viewers to lose their minds over how dope the show is! From the storyline to the music to the unmatched chemistry we have together as a cast, it’s a rare combination with authenticity.
What have you enjoyed most about shooting Queens?
I’m loving getting to do something I’ve never imagined: rapping and dancing while embodying a multidimensional woman.
Is there anything you want viewers to know while watching the show?
I want viewers to know that we love what we do and we’re really proud of this show. It’s a show made from our hearts.
Tell us more about the show and the role your character plays.
The show isn’t just about second chances, it’s about sisterhood. It’s about embracing where you are in life and remembering who you are and what you’re made of, and not being so proud that you [think you] can do life alone. It takes being vulnerable enough to admit you need other people and then loving those people.
How was this show different for you than previous shows you’ve been in?
Let’s put it this way: This is the first time I’m in love with the whole process, the people and the work.
Out of all the shows you’ve been in, which one is your favorite?
Queens! Next question.
How did you begin acting?
My first job was for a McDonald’s commercial. Next was a voice-over for Kmart. I happened to sing the jingle for a campaign. I saw my paycheck and I was hooked. I was 19 years old and already had a down payment for a house.
Do you have any go-to activities or places in Atlanta?
I’m working so much on Queens I haven’t been able to explore Atlanta, but I love Piedmont Park and eating at Houston’s.
What’s been your favorite area in Atlanta and why?
Midtown is popping. I enjoy city life.
Are there any aspects of Atlanta that stand out to you compared to other cities?
I love the diversity of Atlanta. I love the culture and the down-to-earth vibe of the city. I might stay for a while after Queens wraps season one.
