It seems no name could be more fitting for this tucked away, charming town on the Gulf of Mexico. Seaside transports visitors to a simpler time; walking or biking tend to be the most popular ways to get around. Colorful cottages line the narrow streets with no two exactly alike. Popular activities here include listening to live music in the town’s Central Square and visiting the local farmer’s market. Fun fact, Seaside was also the filming location of the Truman Show!
When thinking of picturesque spots in Georgia, Savannah may come to mind first. However, Jekyll Island — now celebrating its 75th year as a State Park — offers breathtaking views of the North Atlantic. 22 miles of bike paths and nature trails allow visitors to explore the coastal ecology and impressive Historic District. Activities include attending a historic cottage tour, golfing and visiting the Georgia Sea Turtle Center.
This town is home to the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, a 5-star luxury hotel that offers a whopping 5 championship courses to play golf on. Even more extraordinary is the wildlife that inhabits this 10-mile stretch of shoreline; bobcats, white-tailed deer, alligators and sea turtles share the land and sea. Kiawah Island prides itself on vital conservation and research efforts, prompting bobcat taggings — and namings! — each year.
Mystic offers unparalleled New England charm. Quaint family-run shops litter Main Street as the Mystic River flows through this maritime town. Paddle boards, kayaks and boats are all available for rent here. Take a visit to the numerous vineyards and breweries for a taste of the Connecticut and Coastal Wine Trails too!
Tucked into the scenic Adirondack Mountains, the Lake George Area offers incredible dinner cruises, an amusement park and rail biking. Whitewater rafting and jet skiing remain popular adventure choices as well. Known as the “Queen of American Lakes,” Lake George even offers beautiful bordering beaches to its visitors.
The tiny town of Stowe is home to less than 1,000 residents, but offers no shortage of big views. Stowe is located at the highest peak of Vermont, Mount Mansfield, and provides a magnificent backdrop of the Green Mountains. Activities offered in the summer include taking a hot air balloon ride above the landscape, getting pampered at a world-class spa and hopping on a gondola ride.
Located 30 miles south of Cape Cod, Nantucket looks like a town taken straight out of a storybook. The cobblestone streets are home to bright boutiques, book shops and beachside restaurants offering fresh seafood. Take a ferry ride over to the island; colorful bikes replace cars upon arrival. Swimming and surfing are the perfect means to enjoy the neighboring ocean.
Portland is the town of lighthouses and lobster. Visitors may take a tour of all 6 of the picturesque lighthouses that dot the Maine town’s coastline. The fresh lobster here remains unparalleled and can be enjoyed at the Portland Lobster Company, which offers live music as well. Additional activities in the summer include picking strawberries, attending the outdoor film festival and participating in an art walk.
