It's All About the '80s, Ladies

By Kelsie Allen Barton | October 10, 2018 | Articles

This fall, the fashion world’s throwing it back to the ’80s, with designers such as Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs and Versace sending some of the decade’s greatest hits down the runways (exaggerated shoulders! Bold belts! Sequins!). The trend got us thinking about the O.G. shoulder-padded power-suit crew: the cast of the sitcom Designing Women, which aired from 1986 to 1993 and was set in Atlanta. The only thing that could top the feisty, feminist attitude of Julia Sugarbaker (played by the late Dixie Carter) were the characters’ electric-hued, more-is-more ensembles—think animal prints, rushing details and oversize blazers, all of which are making a comeback—which they they accessorized with a string of pearls and a razor-sharp comeback. It seems the higher the shoulders (and hair), the closer to perfection this season—and here in the South, we don’t hate it one bit.
