He's Got the Moves

By Allison Mitchell | August 5, 2014 | Articles

He sings; he acts; he dances (quite well, we might add); and he recently closed out a national dance show (Move Live on Tour) with his sis, Julianne Hough. It’s no exaggeration to say that the dashing Derek Hough is a bona fide triple threat. This month, the Emmy winner is adding author to his revved-up résumé with the release of Taking the Lead: Lessons From a Life in Motion ($25, William Morrow). “It’s about lessons I’ve learned through years of coaching and trying to bring the best out in people. From growing up in Utah to moving to London as a kid to competing around the world to Dancing With the Stars, it’s a collection of behind-the-scenes moments,” says Derek. His most recent memorable snapshot? Taking a break from on-camera choreography to connect with fans all over the country through his Move Live on Tour show. “You just don’t have any idea when you’re in L.A. in that studio [on DWTS]. Then you go into these little towns you’ve never heard of, and people are screaming, or they come up and say how much they love the show and how much joy it brings them. It’s incredible,” Derek reveals. While the rumor mill is already buzzing with possible contestants for the fall season of DWTS, the 29-year-old is remaining tight-lipped on whether he’ll compete for the Mirror Ball once again. “There’s a lot of changes happening behind the scenes; we have new producers after 18 seasons,” he confesses. “We’ll see what happens.” As for his love for A-Town, Derek is down with the Dirty South. “I have plenty of memories in Atlanta; I’m just not sure any of them are shareable!” he laughs. Dancing his way into our hearts, indeed. @derekhough
