Finding Purpose

For an organization to gain nationwide recognition with zero marketing campaigns is almost unheard of. For that organization to be a nonprofit is even more surreal. Atlanta, meet Blake Canterbury, the face behind brand-new Atlanta-based app and online giving platform Purposity, which has done just that by shaking up the charity scene one tap at a time.

In true millennial fashion, social media set the gears in motion in Canterbury’s creative mind. “I was fascinated with the concept of being able to communicate
a message to potentially millions of people at one time,” says the Griffin, Ga.-raised entrepreneur. “I wondered, ‘Can this be used for good at some level?’” The short answer: Yes, it can—so Canterbury and his team began sharing stories of Atlantans in need via social media and connecting them
with the city’s helpful hands, which ultimately led the do-gooders on a two-year journey to create Purposity.

The 34-year-old took it up a notch (more like 10) and began collaborating with local nonprofits and organizations (think Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Atlanta Public Schools and more), eventually launching the Purposity name in 2016, and the official app this past November. Big names in ATL like Star 94.1’s Jeff Dauler and Jenn Hobby have even taken notice and joined in on the giving game via the user-friendly app (it only takes three taps and less than one minute to fulfill a need from a nearby nonprofit, from a new pair of shoes for a student at a Title I school to a pair of headphones for a cancer patient)—not to mention it’s been successfully spreading by word of mouth with the stats to back it up. “We’ve never had a need go longer than three days without being met,” says the founder and CEO. “And 100 percent of every need going in is being met.”
