Diva Diaries

By Kelsie Allen Barton | December 14, 2018 | Articles

“As a high-school student, I began curating retro-themed yard sales and even selling pieces that I picked to shops in Little Five Points,” says New Orleans-based Candice Gwinn, the force behind vintage-inspired clothing and lingerie brand Trashy Diva, which boasts locations in the Big Easy as well as Atlanta’s Poncey-Highland ’hood. A fan of feminine silhouettes and fun novelty prints, Gwinn says, “I am a very happy person naturally, and I rarely take anything too seriously. I think that bleeds over into how I dress.” And also how she runs her company: “Whether it’s providing a livelihood to creative young women in business... or designing a dress that makes a woman feel like a powerful, sexy boss—as an artist (and a human being), I think being positively impactful is the most meaningful thing you can hope to accomplish.” @candicegwinn

01/ “My most coveted item from our fall/winter collection is the Carmen long dress in Mod Flamenco floral. It’s easy to wear with a black wide-brim hat and boots for a day look, or dressed up with heels for an event.” $345, @trashydiva

02/ “I really love the newly renovated Hotel Clermont. I think the rooftop bar is so fun, and I worship the interior decor of the downstairs bar.” @hotelclermont

03/ “The Carmen long dress works with a variety of colorful heels, but I love it with the custom made-to-match Re-Mix leather Rhonda heels.” $198, @trashydiva

04/ “This past summer, I took a few weeks to travel in Europe. I was lucky enough to drop in at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London during the recent Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up. This exhibit, as well as the Dutch Costume Museum in Amsterdam, has had a great impact on the pieces I am doing for SS19. Both were inspiring in their similar use of color, intricate patterns and reverence for tradition and quality.” @vamuseum; @dutchcostumemuseum

05/ “I love Cyndi Lauper—obviously. She’s a vintage lover, beauty rule-breaker and has maybe the most colorful personal style ever. And Jane Fonda—can she be any more fabulous? She looks just as great at 80 as at 25... definitely an inspiration for how to stay chic while growing older.”

06/ “I love to hang out, buy treasures and grab lunch with my mom at the Scott Antique Markets (if I can time my trip right!).” @scottantiquemarkets
