You may know Desiree Ross as the sweet, loving Sophia Greenleaf on Oprah Winfrey Network’s ATL-filmed show, Greenleaf, which takes viewers on a crazy journey with a family constantly falling apart and together all at the same time. Here, JEZ sits down with the stunning 17-year-old to find out more about what inspires her, what it’s like to work with Oprah (!) and where she likes to hang in the A.
What do you love most about your character? I love that Sophia is an example to her family. She’s clear on what’s right and what’s wrong in her heart and doesn’t mind expressing her beliefs in the most loving way. She really wants the best for everyone. She has definitely taught me that it’s OK to genuinely be myself.
When not filming, what do you like to do in Atlanta? Shopping and eating, of course! I love going to The Shops Buckhead Atlanta, Lenox Square, Phipps Plaza and Atlantic Station. You name it, I’ve been there. An awesome go-to spot for all of us at Greenleaf is Eclipse di Luna. They have the best vegetable empanadas!
Favorite thing in your closet right now? Go! My Fendi backpack. My favorite store at Lenox Square is Fendi; I literally go in there and hang out with all the employees.
Being a teen actor, how do you stay focused? Sometimes it’s hard, but my family keeps me on track. My mom and dad are both really hard workers, so seeing them sacrifice so much really inspires me to make sure I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing.
How is it working with the “O”? She’s like this huge ball of angel glitter! Being around her—she’s a normal human being, but enlightened beyond the stars. It’s inspiring to see someone who is constantly working on bettering herself so that she can better serve others. She’s taught me that love always wins.
