You never miss when it comes to bringing delectable food to the city. Why was it important for you to create Botica? Why in Atlanta? I wanted to build the next generation of Mexican/Spanish/Mediterranean cuisine, with a really fun, local Cheers-like environment. Whether you are celebrating a special occasion, having a drink with a friend or watching the big game with your work buddies, we think we created a place for all of that and more.
Atlantans love Mexican-inspired dishes. Where did your love for Mexican cuisine originate? The heritage of Mexican culture came from the Spanish culture, which you’ll find on our menu and taste in our dishes. My passion for fusion cooking is inspired by my upbringing in the Middle East, Spain and Italy. My passion for cooking and creating recipes [comes] from my great-grandmother and grandmother growing up in Lebanon. My family also lived in Spain and Italy, which influenced my love of hybrid cuisine.
What would you recommend for eager first-time diners? Grilled oysters with spinach and herbed butter, wagyu carpaccio with truffle aioli, capers and manchego for appetizers. Rack of lamb with pearl onions, crispy potatoes and PX Madeira sauce for your entree and the beloved Spicy Sandía watermelon margarita. Oh, and of course try your favorite tacos.
Despite being a successful restaurateur, you remain active in community and philanthropy. Why is philanthropy important to you? I feel very strongly about giving back for the many blessings I have received, so I am very involved in Atlanta’s charitable community. I consider my staff to be my family and I take very seriously the commitment I have made to them.
What is something readers would be surprised to learn about you? I love gardening, golf and any outdoor activity. My favorite plants are gardenia bushes and star jasmine vines. They remind me of my great-grandmother.
What is the most beneficial cooking tip you can share? Never stop learning and trying new spices and new cooking techniques. Don’t be afraid of failing.
What do you think has been the key to the successes of your businesses so far? Unconditional commitment and hard work. I surround myself with amazing people who become part of the work family culture. We are a unified team, and that has proven to be a recipe for success.
