ATL-based singer, rapper and songwriter Rex Evans (@rexaevans) had a breakout year, between his newly dropped single “Searchin” and new music video for “Backend.” Here, we caught up with Evans about his music, new projects in the works and favorite haunts in the A.
Tell me about your journey into music. My journey into music was a twisted one; it was not a straight line. I tried sports, school and other paths that didn’t work out. I feel like music found me in a weird way; I kind of just went with it. I definitely think it’s a generational thing. It’s in me not on me.
What do you hope to communicate through your music? My goal is to communicate what I’m feeling or current situations I’m experiencing at any moment of time. I usually pull from whatever vibe is around.
Who have been your inspirations? A few of my inspirations are my parents, Prince and Charlamagne tha God.
Tell me about the inspiration behind your new single, “Searchin.” The inspiration for “Searchin” is the feeling of the potential of there being love between you and someone; it sort of creeps up on you, and before you know it, all you can think of is them. It’s that moment when you start to see that you might have found the person you want to spend the rest of your life with… maybe.
Who has been your favorite artist to collaborate with?
My favorite artist to collaborate with so far is Seddy Hendrinx from Generation Now. We had a good time.
Any upcoming projects in the works? We are working on dropping a project at the top of 2022; we will be dropping singles until then. I’m definitely excited to drop. I feel like the best is yet to come, but until then, keep up with me on all streaming and social media platforms.
Favorite ATL spots? My favorite Atlanta spot for shoes and clothes is Wish Atlanta (@wishatl). I also like Peters Street Station’s (@petersstreetstation) Wednesday night music and Chairs (@chairsupstairs) for karaoke. Best food spots are definitely Tuk Tuk Thai Food Loft (@tuktukthaifoodloft) and Arden’s Garden (@ardensgardenatl).
