We saw you here last summer opening for Kenny Chesney. Tell us about singing with him on “You and Tequila” and “El Cerrito Place.”
It was really out of the blue. I didn’t know anything about him, and apparently, he had heard some of my material on his iPod when he was shuffling. I went down to Nashville and recorded for about 20 minutes and got a rewarding experience out of it. It was like a blind date, but totally fun.
We’re excited to have you back in the ATL this month. What’s your experience been like in the South?
I love Atlanta because it seems like there’s an energy [here] that’s not like anything else. I don’t know if it’s because of the heat, the culture or the style, but there’s something about it that makes me want to turn it on. My most memorable time [here] was at Chastain Park—it was epic. It stormed really bad, and to this day, I have water stains on my guitars. Our bus caught on fire that day, too. It was crazy!
That’s nuts! We have to ask, do you ever get mistaken for supermodel Heidi Klum?
I do get mistaken for her. It’s so weird. It happened in Germany, which was the weirdest, since that’s where she’s from. It was really unnerving because I figured if anyone knows what she looks like, it’s [Germans]!
You get one shot to steal another artist’s material. Which song do you take?
“Get Lucky” [by Daft Punk ft. Pharrell Williams]. That song is so good. The second I heard it, I was super pissed I didn’t write it!
