Goodness Gracious!
Saving Grace’s Kenny Johnson is very familiar with getting (and giving) the third degree. We caught up with him for our very own interrogation, and, of course, he gave us his full cooperation.

JEZ: Saving Grace is the second show where you’ve been cast as a cop. Do you think you’re being type-casted?

KJ: The Shield character was a flawed, dirty detective. In this show, it’s more of a character-driven show. It deals with a lot of real moral issues, which is kind of cool. People may say, “Oh, you’re a cop, you’re a cop,” but I never look at characters that way.

JEZ: What’s it like working with Holly Hunter?

KJ: She’s one of those human beings that when you first meet her, she is so incredibly open, and she has this thing that kind of just melts you. And she has that on-screen. She works harder than anyone I’ve ever met in my life.

JEZ: What should we expect in the upcoming episodes of Saving Grace?

KJ: Christina Ricci comes onto the show. I take a break from Holly, so she partners up with Ricci for three episodes, and Holly doubts if Christina’s character has the heart of a cop. Kathy Baker comes on for a couple episodes. And I can’t say what, but we’ve got a tremendous finale.

JEZ: Besides the show, what else are you currently working on?

KJ: I’m working on a documentary with a friend of mine about rape kits. We’re trying to bring more awareness to the problem in America of [there being] like 500,000 untested files. A woman will come in after being raped and they’ll charge her $1,500 for doing the rape kit, and they never have any intention of processing it unless somebody gets a private lab to pay for it [to be processed] … it’s very unfortunate.
